Far North - Cape Reinga to Tapotupotu Bay

Saturday 5th January

Day 7

Cape Reinga to Tapotupotu Bay

Just round the corner from Cape Reinga is a beautiful little bay called Tapotupotu...its about as far North as you can get and the sea is this amazing turquoise colour. It's a cool little DOC campsite, only $6pp/night, but you have to make do with cold showers (we didn't bother and used the sea instead).

Awesome 2.5 hour hilly hike back towards Cape Reinga, with an idyllic, out of a movie style beach called Sandy Bay halfway. We stopped for a swim and lunch and had it completely to ourselves...this is one place we will always remember!

There's a totally different feel to this part of the country...Maori believe Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua) is where after death, the spirit leaves the shores on its way back to their homeland (Hawaiki)...you can feel it's possible once you have seen this place
